Any tips? Fishing for catfish in western, ny. on a river, near a creek.?

Q:

A: Hey rsf, I find it hard to believe you want to fish for catfish with the salmon, trout, bass and pike up there but the location you described is excellent for catfish. I was catfishing a tidal creek off of the Delaware river this past weekend in New Jersey and we managed to catch a few catfish and bass around the mouth of every feeder creek and stream on the outgoing tide. We caught some shad that were swimming around the boat using our castnet and used them as bait. The shad were the size of a bluegill so we used them whole with a split shot on the line to get the bait close to the bottom. We fished the edges of the creek mouths and streams paying close attention to any cover within these areas. Tree stumps, downed trees, weed beds they all held fish because they all had baitfish swimming around. Bass, catfish, carp and tiger muskies held around the cover because of the food source. I even managed to catch a few channel cats on a spinnerbait fishing for bass. I use natural bait whenever I can, not that I am knocking anyone else's bait choice but I have never seen a hotdog or piece of cheese swimming around the cover and structure these fish use to ambush their prey. I know what works for my friends and myself. Good luck!
